Contactless mobile payments being accepted on bus network from today ahead of wider roll out across London’s transport network in September
EE customers can now pay via their smartphone for journeys on London’s bus network, the first time such a service has ever been available to UK consumers.
Customers require an NFC-enabled handset, an EE NFC SIM and the operator’s Cash on Tap application which already allows for contactless mobile payments in the likes of Greggs, Pret A Manger, McDonalds and more than 300,000 locations around the country.
Existing payment caps that are in place for customer’s paying via Oyster card will be carried over to the new payment service meaning that daily bus fares will cost a maximum of £4.40 and weekly charges will be capped at £20.20. Users must pre-load cash onto the application and it requires a mobile connection for the payment to be processed.
Last week, EE announced that the service would be available on the London rail network comprising of Underground, Overground and DLR services from September 16.
EE claims Cash on Tap will be compatible with more 500,000 customer handsets by the end of this year including the Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One (M8), Sony Xperia Z2 and many other Android handsets. Apple has not built NFC into iPhone handsets.
