GiffGaff founder quits Telefonica to join consumer engagement firm

Gav Thompson will join Thunderhead.com with immediate effect with responsibility for strategic direction of brand

The man whose brainwave led to the foundation of GiffGaff has quit Telefonica to take up a role at customer engagement firm Thunderhead.com.

Gav Thompson, who came up with the idea for the community run mobile network on a flight home from a conference, has been appointed as chief marketing officer at his new company.

Thompson had been at Telefonica since September 2007, most recently as global director of business innovation. Prior to that he held roles within the telco such as director of brand innovation and European director of marketing innovation.

Thunderhead.com works with the likes of Guinness, PlayStation, Toyota, Three, Absolut, Pepsi, FedEx and Bacardi, and claims to create personalised campaigns, as opposed to just “marketing at” customers.

Thompson will have responsibility for executing the strategic direction of the Thunderhead.com brand. He began his new role at the beginning of this month.
