Korean manufacturer has agreed to pay rival to end four-year dispute over patent infringement
Samsung has agreed to pay Apple $548 million (£362m) to bring an end to the two rivals long-running battle over patents.
The agreement was disclosed in papers filed to a Californian court on December 4 and brings a resolution to the dispute, started in 2011, a step closer.
A joint case management statement filed to the California court revealed that Samsung had agreed to pay Apple within 10 days of receiving an invoice.
It is part of a wider $1 billion in damages the court awarded Apple in 2012, reduced down to $930 million on appeal, which was split in two parts – $584 million for technology patents, and $382 million relating to claims Samsung had copied Apple’s packaging.
Samsung has now agreed to pay the money, although it said it can claim this back if there are any further developments or if the US Patent and Trademark Office invalidates several Apple patents it is currently investigating.
Last year, USPTO ruled an Apple “pinch to zoom” patent was invalid, a decision which the Californian manufacturer is appealing.
It does not bring the patent war to a close, however, as a US jury is set to rule how much Apple should be awarded for the non-technology dispute next year.
