Online and in-store Christmas shopping equal in 2016

Around 76 per cent of Christmas shoppers plan to shop online, equal to the amount that intend to go in-store this year

According to a poll carried out by advertising marketplace Rubicon Project between August 23 – 25, on 1,000 people – UK consumers prefer to go online more than ever before.

Study also found 88 per cent of shoppers will research Christmas gifts online. Notably almost a quarter (24 per cent) of shoppers are not planning to do any in-store Christmas shopping this year.

Mobile phones have contributed greatly to this rise with 45 per cent of shoppers making a Christmas purchase on mobile devices. Reasons stated are: convenience, better pricing and easy price comparison.

The most popular retailer for Christmas shoppers this year according to the study, will be Argos. Marks & Spencer and eBay follow in second and third.

Rubicon Project UK & Nordics managing director James Brown said: “UK consumers are increasingly looking for an easier way to navigate their way through what can traditionally be a stressful holiday season. The results of this study show that the savvy shopper is making the most of the convenience and efficiency that technology affords, by utilising digital shopping when they can.”
