Vodafone IoT aids declining Harbour seal population

Scottish government-funded study utilised Vodafone’s IoT technology to monitor declining Harbour seal numbers

The operator’s Internet of Things (IoT) technology was used in a study to determine why Harbour seal numbers are dwindling on the Scottish island of Orkney.

The study was conducted between April and August this year (2016), by Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) – funded by the NERC (Natural Environment Research Council).

Ten harbour seals were fitted with tags using Vodafone’s IoT technology. The tags have now dropped off after the seals’ annual moult.

Information from the tag transmit over the Vodafone network revealing the seals’ migration routes and feeding spots.

Vodafone UK corporate and external affairs director Helen Lamprell added: “We are keen to break down technological barriers so that government, the scientific community and the private sector can work together in order to ensure we have the best informed policy decisions for the environment.”
