Garmin launches vivoactive smartwatch

Smartwatch will feature functionality allowing fitness enthusiasts to receive smartphone notifications

Garmin has launched an ultra-thin smartwatch which combines both sports activity trackers and smartphone notifications at CES 2015.

The vivoactive features a 1.4-inch 205×148 display, a battery which can last up to 10 hours in GPS mode, 38g in weight and is just 8mm thick.

It features a range of features that can be linked with apps for cycling, running, swimming, golfing and more sports apps.

These include a heart rate monitor, cadence and bike speed sensor, swimming stroke type and count, shot distance and yardage for golf, as well as more primitive sensors such as a step counter.

A gentle vibration will notify users of incoming calls, texts, reminders and other notifications from a compatible Bluetooth 4.0 device. These will display things like caller ID, full text messages and sender and subject line for e-mails.

Data that is generated from the device will be uploaded throughout the day to the Garmin Connect App which acts as a central hub for all fitness and activity information.

“VĂvoactive combines signature Garmin fitness technology, such as built-in GPS, long battery life and a sunlight-readable display, in an ultra-thin smartwatch that lets users stay connected and achieve more,” said Garmin vice president of worldwide sales Dan Bartel.

“Designed to be worn all day,vĂvoactive can be personalized in many ways – from interchangeable bands to watch faces, apps and widgets – making it versatile, stylish and functional for your life. ”

It is available in white or black and will be available in the US in Q1. No details on European availability have been announced.

It is available for $249 (£164) or with a heart rate monitor for $299 (£197).
