Juniper Research: “Invisible” wearables key to market growth

$80 billion wearables one of most disruptive technologies by 2020, according to “The world in 2020″ report

Wearables indistinguishable from non-smart technology will become widely adopted by 2020 when the global market will reach $80 billion, according to a report from Juniper Research.

Juniper’s “The World in 2020 – a Technology Vision” predicts that wearables will be adopted more widely as some manufacturers refocus on fashion over making tech-centric devices.

The research paper says that by 2020, fashion-based wearables will be more [popular than technology-focussed rivals, and that the overall wearables market will be worth $80 billion.

This will not be the approach taken by all manufacturers though, according to Juniper, as the appearance becomes just a standard part of the design aesthetic.

Other disruptive technologies listed in the report include 5G, which London mayor Boris Johnson wants to rollout in the capital by 2020.

Augmented reality, wireless charging technology, drones and self-driving cars are also listed among the technology that Juniper predicts disrupt the market by 2020.
