Police arrest man in Llanelli, Wales on suspicion of blackmail following attack on telecom provider’s website on October 21
An 18-year-old man has become the fifth person to be arrested in connection with the investigation into the alleged data theft from TalkTalk last month.
He was arrested on suspicion of blackmail and taken into custody at Dyfed Pows police station in Wales.
Yesterday (November 24), detectives from the Metropolitan Police Service’s Cyber Crime Unit and offices from Southern Wales Regional Organised Crime Unit had executed a search warrant at an address in Llanelli, Wales. Investigations continue.
Since the cyber attack on TalkTalk’s website on October 21, four other people have been arrested on suspicion of Computer Misuse Act offences.
These are a 15-year-old boy in County Antrim, Northern Ireland on October 26, 16-year-old boy in Feltham, London on October 29, 20-year-old man in Staffordshire on October 31 and 16-year-old boy in Norwich on November 3. All have been bailed.
Attack not as bad as first feared
In an update to customers on November 6, TalkTalk said the scale of the attack was much more limited than initially suspected, with four per cent of its subscribers having any sensitive data at risk.
The telecoms provider confirmed 156,959 customers had their personal details accessed and of these, 15,656 bank account numbers and and sort codes were accessed.
It also confirmed the 28,000 obscured credit and debit card numbers that were accessed can’t be used for financial transactions, with customers not being identified by the stolen data.
